HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – This week Cheap Eats is back in Kapahulu. That’s right Lyle and Russ are at one of two restaurants on Oahu that have an actual kiawe grill in house. They went to Good to Grill in the Safeway Shopping Center.

If you’ve been searching for that kiawe smoke flavor, then you’re at the right place. Russell and Chef Almar Arcano fanned flames coming from kiawe wood in the pit. “We’re making a turkey loco moco,” Chef Almar says. “That’s our…we made this loco moco in the house. Ground turkey with vegetables.”

Do you believe this, kiawe flapjacks where it’s all in the wrist. What a way to start the morning.
“Good to grill breakfast. Turkey loco moco with garnish. Take a look at it before that egg slides off,” said Russ.

But they also serve up lunch and dinner with many items under ten dollars. The most famous eater in Good to Grill, local entertainer, Danny Kaleikini had Garlic with ahi and brown rice and a side of lemon and some green vegetables.

Lyle asks Danny if he is going healthy.

“The fish is…they give you good portions. Ha, ha, ha.” Danny says.

James Chan from Waialae Nui says about his Good to Grill lunch, “I got my prime rib and grilled shrimp. Pretty good for lunch. I get a kanak attack after this. I have to schedule the nap after I come to Good to Grill.”

They recently opened for breakfast— Russ ordered the surfer’s breakfast, the bananas foster pancakes, chicken adobo omelet, salmon and eggs scramble, and the turkey loco moco, all good to go. Check this out, Russ and Lyle also got hibachi chicken, one of their best sellers. Also, the garlic ahi, prime rib, chicken and pasta, and check this out, a pizza. Not just any pizza, but a Margarita pizza.

“How’s that! A pizza named after booze. I love it.” Lyle says. This is high end stuff but the origins are local. This is the turkey loco moco they cooked up on the grill. Top shape. It’s a winner.

Eating the prime rib, Lyle says with a mouthful, “Ho. Look at this. Prime rib. A little bit of au jus. Into my mouth and it’s gone.”

Ahhh, that kiawe smoke flavor really comes through. It’s Good To Grill on Kapahulu Avenue in the Safeway shopping center. This week’s Cheap Eats.
